Should you tip before or after tax?
Many diners calculate a restaurant tip from the pre-tax subtotal because sales tax is not part of the service charge. Some people prefer to tip on the after-tax total for simplicity. This calculator supports both methods so everyone at the table can see the difference.
Common U.S. restaurant tip percentages
- 15%: commonly used for adequate table service.
- 18%: a frequent default and a common automatic gratuity rate.
- 20%: widely used for good table service.
- 22–25%: often chosen for excellent service or extra effort.
Always check the receipt for an automatic gratuity or service charge before adding another tip, especially for larger groups.
Important notes
Sales tax rates vary by state, county, city and sometimes by the type of purchase. Enter the rate shown on your receipt for the most accurate result. Rounding each share upward can create a total collected amount slightly higher than the exact bill total.
